Specialist restoration
Howell’s School in Cardiff, a Grade II* listed building, required extensive external works while remaining a fully operational site. Works needed to be carefully phased to protect pupils, staff, parents and contractors, while also meeting heritage standards. Unexpected challenges included nesting bats, the discovery of anthrax, and carrying out works during exam season.
Preserving heritage with care
Eden use specialist craftspeople
Eden developed a phased programme to manage the works across different buildings on site. Scaffolding was erected and dismantled in stages, with new fenced walkways and traffic management solutions introduced to maintain safe access. The project included a new roof, reconstruction of 13 chimneys, stone replacement from the Forest of Dean, new rainwater goods, repointing of 1,400m of façade in lime-based mortar, and a mix of new and refurbished timber and metal windows. All works were delivered in line with CADW approval.
The project was completed on time and to the highest standards, with minimal disruption to the school community. Eden successfully balanced sensitive heritage restoration with the practical demands of a live education environment, delivering another successful project for GDST.
