THE CHALLENGE

The Lighthouse Project set out to create a vibrant youth and community hub in Byker, on the east side of Newcastle. The vision was to breathe new life into the disused Grade II Listed St Michael’s Church, transforming it into a safe, inspiring and inclusive space that could bring the community together.

The project brief included both the sensitive restoration of the original building and the construction of a modern annex. The facility needed to accommodate music studios, art spaces, chill-out areas, homework zones, and family-friendly communal kitchens – all while retaining the heritage and integrity of the church building.

In addition, the client wanted to ensure the wider community benefited throughout, with a strong emphasis on working with local contractors and suppliers.

OUR SOLUTION

Eden was appointed to deliver the full refurbishment and new build, handling all aspects from structural interventions through to specialist finishes, landscaping and community engagement.

Restoring a listed building
We carefully restored the fabric of St Michael’s Church, maintaining its original character while making it fit for purpose as a modern community centre. Specialist works included stone repair, glazing, joinery and internal adaptations that respected the building’s heritage listing.

New build annex
A contemporary annex was constructed to house activity spaces such as the music studios, homework zones and chill-out areas and reception. We worked closely with the design team to ensure the new structure complemented the existing church both visually and functionally.

Community-first delivery
In line with the client’s brief, we engaged local subcontractors wherever possible, supporting employment and skill-building within the Byker area.

Extensive landscaping package
The external works were designed to extend the reach and impact of the hub. We delivered a landscaped outdoor area that includes:

  • A protected sports pitch
  • Play equipment
  • A woodland walk and pond
  • Edible planting and growing zones

This gives the community a mix of recreational and educational opportunities in a safe and accessible setting.

THE OUTCOME

The Lighthouse Project is now a beacon for the community – a creative, welcoming space designed to uplift and unite people of all ages. The completed hub respects the site’s history while embracing the future, offering flexible spaces that will serve local residents for years to come.
